Privacy Policy

We collect only what we need, use it only to run the service, and never sell it.

This Privacy Policy explains how Kino ("we", "our", or "us") collects, uses, and protects your information when you use the Kino mobile application ("App"). We have built Kino on a privacy-first foundation. Please read this policy carefully. By using the App you agree to the practices described here.

1. Who We Are

Kino is developed and operated by Petar Perkovski, based in France. For privacy matters, you can reach us at petar.perkovski@gmail.com.

2. What Information We Collect

2.1 Activity Signals

Kino reads your step count from Apple HealthKit with your explicit permission. Your step count is processed entirely on your device. We never upload your raw step count to our servers. Instead, we derive a simple status signal ("doing well", "less active", or "no activity") on your device and transmit only that derived status — anonymously — to our backend.

2.2 Anonymous Account Identifier

When you first open the App, we create an anonymous account for you using Back4App (Parse). This account is identified by a randomly generated ID. It is not linked to your name, email address, phone number, or any other personal identifier. This allows your activity signals to be associated across sessions without us knowing who you are.

2.3 Trusted Contact Information

When you add a trusted contact, we store their name and phone number on our servers in association with your anonymous account. This information is used solely to deliver reassurance notifications to the contacts you choose. We do not use this data for marketing or analytics, and we do not share it with third parties except as required to deliver notifications (e.g., an SMS delivery provider, when that feature is enabled).

2.4 Subscription Information

If you purchase Kino Pro, your subscription is processed by Apple's App Store. We use RevenueCat to verify and manage subscription status. RevenueCat receives a RevenueCat-specific anonymous user ID and purchase receipt data. We do not receive your payment card details. Please review RevenueCat's Privacy Policy for how they handle subscription data.

2.5 Device & Technical Data

We may collect basic technical information such as the iOS version and device model, used solely for error diagnosis and service improvement. This data is not linked to your identity.

2.6 What We Do NOT Collect

  • GPS location or location history — ever.
  • Your name, email address, or phone number (your Kino account is entirely anonymous).
  • Raw health metrics beyond step count (no heart rate, sleep, blood pressure, etc.).
  • Your messages, photos, or any other device content.
  • Browsing history or in-app behaviour beyond what is necessary to operate the service.

3. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect exclusively to:

  • Operate the Kino service — evaluating your activity and generating your reassurance status.
  • Deliver reassurance updates to the trusted contacts you have chosen.
  • Process and verify your Kino Pro subscription.
  • Diagnose technical errors and improve App stability.
  • Comply with our legal obligations.

We do not use your information to serve advertising, build marketing profiles, or sell to third parties.

4. Legal Basis for Processing (GDPR)

If you are located in the European Economic Area (EEA) or the United Kingdom, our legal bases for processing your personal data are:

  • Performance of a contract — processing your data is necessary to provide the Kino service you have signed up for (including delivering notifications to your trusted circle).
  • Legitimate interests — for technical diagnostics and service improvement, where those interests are not overridden by your privacy rights.
  • Consent — for HealthKit access, which you grant explicitly within the App and can withdraw at any time through the Apple Health app.

5. Data Sharing

We share data only in the following limited circumstances:

  • Back4App (Parse) — our backend infrastructure provider, which stores anonymous account data and activity signals. Data is encrypted in transit and at rest.
  • RevenueCat — our subscription management provider. Only subscription and purchase receipt data is shared.
  • SMS delivery provider (when SMS notifications are enabled) — your trusted contacts' phone numbers will be shared with our SMS provider solely to deliver messages on your behalf.
  • Legal requirements — if we are required by law, court order, or competent authority to disclose information, we will do so only to the extent required.

We do not sell, rent, or trade any personal data to any third party.

6. Data Retention

We retain activity signals and account data for as long as your account is active, plus up to 30 days following deletion. Trusted contact information is deleted immediately upon removal from your settings or account deletion. Subscription records are retained for the period required by applicable law (typically 7 years for financial records, held by Apple and RevenueCat — not by us).

7. Data Security

All data in transit between the App and our servers is encrypted using TLS 1.2 or higher. Data at rest is stored encrypted on Back4App infrastructure. We apply the principle of least privilege — no team member has access to your data unless operationally required. Because your Kino account is anonymous, a breach of our servers would not expose your personal identity.

8. Your Rights

Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have the following rights:

  • Access — request a copy of the data we hold about your anonymous account.
  • Deletion — delete all your data from within the App (Settings → Data → Delete All Data) or by emailing petar.perkovski@gmail.com.
  • Portability — request your activity data in a machine-readable format.
  • Rectification — request correction of inaccurate data (e.g., a trusted contact's phone number).
  • Objection — object to processing based on legitimate interests.
  • Restriction — request that processing is restricted while a complaint is investigated.

To exercise any of these rights, contact us at petar.perkovski@gmail.com. We will respond within 30 days. If you are in the EEA, you also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.

9. HealthKit

Kino accesses Apple HealthKit data (step count) with your explicit permission. In accordance with Apple's requirements and our own commitments:

  • HealthKit data is used solely to provide the Kino service — never for advertising, marketing profiles, or sale to third parties.
  • Your raw step count is processed on-device and is not uploaded.
  • You can revoke HealthKit access at any time via the Apple Health app → your profile → Apps & Devices → Kino.

10. Children's Privacy

Kino is not directed at children under the age of 13 (or 16 in the EEA). We do not knowingly collect data from users under these ages. If you believe a child has used the App and provided data, please contact us immediately at petar.perkovski@gmail.com and we will delete the relevant data.

11. International Transfers

Your data may be processed on servers located outside your country of residence, including in the United States. Where required, we ensure appropriate safeguards are in place (such as Standard Contractual Clauses) to protect your data during international transfers.

12. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by updating the "Last updated" date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, via an in-app notice. Continued use of the App after changes take effect constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
